The fact that Marx is not primarily concerned with the development of income or living standards is made clear by the last sentence. The “worsening” of the situation of the worker refers to the totality of his or her working and living conditions, as the following statement also makes clear:

Accumulation of wealth at one pole is, therefore, at the same time accumulation of misery, the torment of labour, slavery, ignorance, brutalization and moral degradation at the opposite pole. (Capital, 1:799)
